چکیده

Three experiments were conducted to determine whether and how weaning, quanti ty of milk produced, suckling intensity, age of dam, or a combination of these factors influence ovarian and/or pituitary response to pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMS), synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), or ovariectomy in postpartum beef cows. Ovarian and pituitary responses, as determined by plasma estrogen, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations, were evoked in both 3-year-old and mature anestrous, suckled cows (experiment 1) at 42 days postpartum with either PMS, Gn-RH, or cessat ion of lactation. All three dosages of PMS (750, 1,500, or 2,250 IU) st imulated estrogen secretion and a subsequent LH surge in anestrous suckled and nonsuckled cows; whereas, PMS only stimulated estrogen secretion in the cows already cyclic at 42 days postpartum. Cows given Gn-RH (75, 150, or 300 ug) had a dose related, biphasic increase in peripheral plasma LH concentration. A comparison between 2-year-old suckled Brown Swiss and Angus heifers at 42 days postpartum (experiment 2) indicated that Brown Swiss produced

Effect of suckling and ovariectomy on the control of luteinizing hormone secretion during the postpartum period in beef cows.

Twenty-two mature pluriparous beef cows were randomly assigned to one of six treatments in a 2 X 3 factorial experiment in order to study the role of suckling and ovarian factors on control of the tonic and episodic release of luteinizing hormone (LH). Twelve cows remained intact (INT) and 10 were ovariectomized (OVX) within 4 days following the day of parturition (Day 0). The suckling intensit...

Opioid inhibition of luteinizing hormone secretion during the postpartum period in suckled beef cows.

Recent studies have shown that naloxone (N), an opioid antagonist, increases concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the postpartum anestrous beef cow. However, the LH response to N was influenced by the postpartum interval. For example, a significant LH response to 200 mg of N occurred on d 42 but not on d 14 or 28 postpartum. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of di...

Effect of naloxone on serum luteinizing hormone, cortisol and prolactin concentrations in anestrous beef cows.

Two experiments were conducted with the opioid antagonist naloxone to determine the effect of opioid receptor blockade on hormone secretion in postpartum beef cows. In Exp. 1, nine anestrous postpartum beef cows were used to measure the effect of naloxone on serum luteinizing hormone (LH), cortisol and prolactin concentrations. Cows received either saline (n = 4) or 200 mg naloxone in saline (n...

EFFECTS OF INTERMII"rENT INJECTIONS OF LHRH ON SECRETORY PATTERNS OF LH AND FSH AND OVARIAN FOLLICULAR GROWTH DURING POSTPARTUM ANOVULATION IN SUCKLED BEEF COWS 1,2

Changes in numbers of ovarian follicles and coincident secretion of pituitary gonadotropins were characterized in suckled, anovulatory beef cows injected iv with 500 ng of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) every 2 h for 48 or 96 h, starting 21.4 +_ .4 d after parturition. Two hours after the last injection, all cows were ovariectomized. Compared with saline-injected controls, LHRH ha...

Effects of feeding diets containing endophyte-infected fescue seed on luteinizing hormone secretion in postpartum beef cows and in cyclic heifers and cows.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of feeding endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum)-infected fescue (Festuca arundinacea Shreb.) seed on LH secretion in postpartum beef cows and in cycling heifers and cows. In Exp. 1, spring-calving primiparous Angus cows (n = 16) were pair-fed for 75 d diets that contained endophyte-free or endophyte-infected (95%) fescue seed that containe...
